“Dear Lord, what are those red marks on your shoulder? They look painful.” Expressed a horrified fellow gym member as I came off the bike.
“It’s called Cupping” I replied and so our conversation began.
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy has been around for hundreds of years, originally performed with animal horns, now predominantly performed with glass or plastic vacuum cups.
So, what exactly do the cups do? Well, the effect is quite the opposite to traditional massage, instead of applying pressure to an area the cups create a vacuum and lift the tissue up, drawing lymph and blood to the area, loosening and allowing the tissue to separate and move whilst promoting healing.
So, a question I am often asked, so does it hurt?
The simple answer is sometimes. When you have healthy, free tissue the cups will glide quite happily, however with injury or use the tissue can become stuck. The cups help to unstick the tissue, this can be uncomfortable, a nipping sensation can occur but after some work, the sensation will ease and result is a happier looser body.
So, the final question how long do the marks last?
Every person is different, some can last a few hours, other can be around for up to 21 days. Most clients have reported between seven to ten days.
